On 02/19/99.  At 62.5X can see the PN with averted vision alone as a faint star forming a pair with another faint star but needed the O-III filter to identify it as a PN.  The PN and the faint star appear to be of similar brightness, but through the O-III filter the PN becomes much brighter than its mate.  Strong response to the O-III filter. 17.5" (7/9/99): picked up a low power but best viewed at 380x.  The faint
central star is cleanly resolved with two thin "jets" extending N-S, roughly
15" on either side of the star.  The nebulosity dims slightly near the
central star but is not detached.  This unusual bi-polar object looks more
similar to a fairly faint edge-on galaxy than a PN although the tips of the
extensions do not noticeably taper.  No response to filtration.

13": at 166x appears as a moderately bright, very elongated planetary but
does not respond positively to OIII or Daystar 300 filters!  The central star
is visible at 214x. A small group of stars including a mag 12 star lies 5' S.
Classified as a bipolar PN or possible proto-PN.

At 134X & 169X, can see the PN as a fuzzy faint near double star requiring the O-III filter and averted vision to identify it as a PN. Good response to the O-III & UHC filters. No response to the H-B filter. At 254X, through the O-III filter, the PN appears to be two bright spots, quite close, with a linear smear across the spots. 17.5: at 105x and OIII filter; fairly faint, fairly small, elongated E-W.
Just visible without filter although viewed at a very low elevation (this
is the third farthest southern planetary observed from Northern California
as of 4/90).  Excellent contrast gain with the OIII filter.

suspected of being slightly non-stellar.  Mag 15.5 planetary M3-38 is
located 7.2' ESE.

This PN was discovered by John Herschel on June 19, 1835.
Also known as J.H. 3675 & GC 4248.
Field Description: At 62.5X, can see as a faint star when using averted vision alone, requiring the O-III filter to identify it as a PN.  Good response to the O-III & UHC filters.  No response to the H-B filter.  At 100X, a faint small disk is visible.  At 200X, the disk can be seen but no central star is visible.
Observed at Mt. Pinos on 07/12/91 & 06/26/92 and at the pullout on the road to Mt. Abel on 05/19/93 by Kent Wallace using an 8” f/10 SCT.

M3_38, RA 17,21.1 DEC -29,03 MAG 16.6 CSM ? SIZE stellar, on 06/27/97. At 134X & 169X, could see both M 3-38 and M 2-11 in the same field. M 2-11 was quite a bit brighter than M 3-38. M 3-38 required the O-III filter and averted vision to find. Good response to the O-III and UHC filters. No response to the H-B filter. M 3-38 appears stellar. At 254X, could see the PN as a faint star with averted vision alone but required the UHC filter to identify it as a PN. Identified the field in the SEC finderchart. 17.5: best at 105x using an OIII filter; with this combination appears very
faint, very small, estimate 15" and mag V = 15.0-15.5.  Can just hold
steadily with averted vision once position known.  More difficult at 220x
using a Daystar 300 filter.

M3_39, RA 17,21.2 DEC -27,11 MAG 15.3 CSM ? SIZE 21"x15" on 06/27/97. At 134X, small fuzzy disk requiring the O-III filter and averted vision. Good response to the O-III filter. Fair response to the UHC filter. No response to the H-B filter. The PN is right in the Pipe Dark Nebula. At 169X, can see a faint hint of the PN with averted vision alone. At 254X, could definitely see the PN with averted vision alone as a small faint fuzzy blob. Identified the field in the SEC finderchart. Kent Wallace, Navaho Flats, California, 20" f 5.0 reflector.
