Abell34, RA 09,45.6 DEC -13,10 MAG 12.9 CSM 16.3 SIZE 281"x268" on 04/07/96. At 79X, very large, faint diffuse blob, requiring the O-III filter and averted vision. No response to the UHC and H-B filters. I identified the central region in the SEC finderchart. I was fooled when trying to find it because it is just north of two widely spaced stars and there are two sets of widely spaced stars in the general area. 17.5": this huge ancient PN was immediately seen at 100x using an OIII filter
surrounding the mag 9.6 central star (a white-dwarf companion is the ionizing
star).  It appeared roughly 6'x4' extended SW-NE with the mag 9.6 offset NE
of center.  The brightest part of the nebulosity is near this star and in the
vicinity SW.  The nebulosity does not reach a mag 10.5 star situated 5.5' SW
of the central star but does extend to a mag 11.5 star 2.7' following the
central star.  The PN has a very low but irregular surface brightness. The
edge of the halo fades into the background so it is difficult to trace.  Deep

LoTr5 report from Wolfgang "Howdii" Howurek:
On May 3rd, 2003, an exceptionally clear night at Ebenwaldhöhe, Lower Austria, I was able to observe LoTr 5 with my 18" f/4.5 Dob.
We were busy observing "Rosse spiral galaxies" according to Ken Hewitt-White's article in this year's May issue of S&T, when I noticed LoTr 5 is not very far from NGC4725, one of our "Rosse spirals". So I wanted to give LoTr 5 a try. I used an exit pupil of 6mm, the eyepiece was equipped with an OIII filter. Of course, the ~8 mag "central" star is not helpful when searching for a faint nebula. At first I could see nothing. After some minutes I started a new try. Suddenly, when I moved my scope to re-center the image I could glimpse a very faint, huge glow around this star, something, the other ~8mag stars nearby didn't show. Since I now had an idea what to look for, it was still difficult, but not extremely hard to see this nebula. My observing partner Walter Koprolin was then able to confirm my sighting. So, at all, I think 18" is not the lower limiting aperture for viewing this nebula, but it might be close to it.

A positive sighting report from Art Russell sent via the amastro egroup:
46cm. 112X with OIII filter. Extremely faint. Bearly visible as a soft diffuse glow as distinguished by the lack of a similar glow around surrounding stars. About 10' in apparent diameter centered around a central star in an arc of 3 8th/9th magnitude stars. The central star is apparently about 8th magnitude. 990510  0505-0530UT, cl , 16+ telescopic.  Texas Star Party, Prude Ranch, Fort Davis, Texas.

Here are two more positive sighting reports sent in by Jens Bohle:
I know two observations here in germany:
Frank Richardsen using a 20incher @ 80x + O[III] and my own observation in
may last year at our starparty "Internationales Teleskoptreffen Vogelsberg"
. I made my observation under +6,7skies using my 20incher at
6 and 9mm exit pupil + O[III] filter. LT 5 is a very faint round glow only
visible for me while slightly moving the scope. The "central star" (in fact
he isn´t it) is very bright and makes the observation very difficult.
Past weekend I gave a lecture at "Deep Sky Tagung" of the Vereinigung der
Sternfreunde about difficult objects for visual observers including the
giant PuWe 1 and LT 5. Even some of the advanced astrophotographer had no success with these object(s)!

Here is another excellent report from Julian (Jay) McNeil in Texas:
LoTr5 is certainly not an easy target under anything less than dark, transparent skies.  As Brian mentioned, however, it is fairly apparent in my 16-incher from west Texas on good nights.  You will almost certainly need the OIII or Ultrablock/UHC filter along with a fairly low power to initially glimpse the faint disc because of the nebula's large size and low surface brightness.  Under further scrutiny, you may even be able to detect a rather thick "doughnut"-like annularity to the disc.  Interestingly, this was one of my 20 "challenging" PNe that I presented in my talk to TSP'ers last year.  I have a pretty good drawing of the nebula along with a slide of the drawing for PN talks.  Needless to say, though, it was one that I officially classified on the list as "Holy Cow man!  This is first class retinal torture!"  On the other hand, a few of the AmAstro locals seemed to have actually enjoyed the hunt (boy, are we sick puppies or what?) and positively saw the nebula in an 18-incher.

(Eric Honeycutt)Last Wednesday night, April 26-27( 2000), I successfully observed LoTr5:

Location: Troutdale, Va
Elevation: 3400'
Instrument: 22" f/4.1 Starmaster
Limiting Eye Mag: 7.6 star in Ursa Major (SAO 28038)
Transparency: 1 (1-10, best to worst)
Seeing: 4 (1-10, best to worst).
Powers used: 74x, 118x

Finding the field for LoTr5 (aka: PNG 339.9+88.4) in Coma Berenices was not difficult. The planetary is situated between two bright stars of 8.2 and 9.4 magnitude. An 8.6 magnitude star is superimposed on the Pn acting as a pseudo central star (the true CS magnitude is 14.9 per Megastar). I first scrutinized the two surrounding stars and then the middle star at 74x and continued this until an intriguing feature developed that readily conveyed confirmation. After a few minutes, a faint "airy disk-like structure"  was evident around the middle star which was not detectable around the other two stars. 118x revealed a faint disk that even displayed annularity though the central hole (or possibly just a slight darkening) was hard to hold with averted vision. The true central star was not detected because of the overwhelming brightness of the middle 8.6 star. The observation was also made by my observing partner Pierre Faucher. Difficult but there are some Abell Pns that have given me more of a snare.

17.5: faint but easily picked up at 100x without filter as a moderately
large, round disc less than 1' diameter.  Nicely enhanced with OIII filter
and appears moderately bright, crisp-edged and slightly elongated N-S,
45"x40".  Also nice view at 100x with UHC filter.  Located 6.7' S of mag

13: at 79x and OIII filter appears fairly faint, fairly small, round, with
an even surface brightness and sharp edges.  Faint but visible without
filter.  Easily takes 166x with a UHC filter.  No central star seen with or
