17.5: at 118x and OIII filter; extremely difficult and cannot hold steadily
with averted vision once identified.  Fairly small, unusual appearance as
surrounding a mag 13 star (not the central star) and extending W of the
star in a E-W orientation.  Mag&127; 7.9 SAO 115683 5' NNE detracts from
viewing.

K1_11, RA 07,36.1 DEC +02,42 MAG 15.4p CSM 19.6 SIZE 105"x68" on 04/18/98. At 79X, faint, diffuse, good sized disk, requiring the O-III filter and averted vision. Fair response to the O-III filter. Poor response to the UHC filter. No response to the H-B filter. At 134X and 169X, the image is much poorer. Identified the field in the SEC finderchart. The PN is next to a faint star to the east. 17.5: appears as a mag 14 "star" at 105x.  Verified with OIII filter.  A
slightly brighter mag 13 star is 1.3' WNW and provides a good comparison
for blinking.  Using an OIII filter, the planetary is significantly
brighter than this star.  A mag 10.5 star lies 2.1' SW.  Located 13' N of
mag 6.5 SAO 153224 and 13' E of mag 7.0 SAO 153200.
13: at 79x appears stellar, very faint, estimate V = 14.0.  Located 2.5' NE
of a mag 11 star and 15' N of a mag 6.5 star.  Impressive contrast gain
with OIII and stellar up to 214x.

17.5: this bi-polar planetary reveals fascinating detail at 380x!  The
compact high surface brightness inner region is elongated NNW-SSE.  Two
bright knots comprise both ends and the surface brightness is irregular.  The
nebulosity is much weaker SW of the main body with a cup-shaped dark "notch"
protruding into this central bar.  The outer halo is oriented SW-NE with a
brighter wing similar to a spiral arm which is attached at the W edge and
swings back towards the S.  The outer nebulosity is weaker and less
well-defined on the N and NE sides.

13": very bright and small with a very high surface brightness.  This
planetary has a double shell structure with an elongated box-shape oriented
NW-SE and a fainter shell oriented SW-NE.  One or two condensations are
visible in the central part.  Located 3.0' W of mag 9 SAO 153271.

on 02/15/99, at 62.5X, good sized blob centered on a relatively bright star, requiring the O-III filter and averted vision.  Good response to the O-III and UHC filters.  Fair response to the H-B filter.  At 100X and 200X can see the PN with averted vision alone as a haze around the star which also envelopes a nearby condensed blob.  This was previously seen in my 20" scope. The big question is, am I seeing Ns238 or NGC2579?
Kent Wallace, Western Australia, 8" SCT.

Ns238, RA 08,20.9 DEC -36,14 MAG 11.5 CSM 10.5b SIZE 56" on 03/21/96. I think I found it but I am not completely sure. If you look at the SEC finderchart on page 221 you will see a large blob which is easily visible and there is a small faint blob just SE of the big blob. If Ns 238 is the large blob then we have an identification error because on chart 363 of URA it is listed as NGC 2579. Part II of the SEC page 509 doesn't say anything about it being next to the nebula NGC 2579 but it does say Ns 238 is 56" in diameter which matches the large blob. NGC 2000.0 has NGC 2579 listed as a cluster and a nebula. Anyway the large blob responds very well to the O-III filter. I could not see the smaller blob to the SE just next to the large blob. Easily visible with direct vision using a Daystar 300 filter;  round, even
surface brightness, estimate V = 13.5-14.0.

17.5": at 100x + OIII filter, a faint, huge, roundish glow encompassing a mag
10 star which is SE of center.  With averted vision appears ~8' in diameter
with a very low but irregular surface brightness.  The edge of the halo is
not crisply defined.  Not visible without filter.  The bright star is part of
a distinctive parallelogram with sides roughly 9'.  The PN does not reach the
mag 10 star 8' W although on photographs it extends this far.

17.5": this giant planetary was best at 83x using an OIII filter.  Fairly
faint, easy with averted vision, almost round but edges not sharply defined.
Two mag 10 and 11 stars are either involved or just off the edge.  Three
other mag 10-11 stars nearby form a parallelogram enclosing the planetary
with sides 11'x8' oriented N-S and WSW-ENE.  Located 30' N of O.195 = 7.5/8.0 at 10".

Abell31, RA 08,54.2 DEC +08,54 MAG 12.0 CSM 15.5 SIZE 970"x930" on 03/21/96. At 63.5X, a large diffuse disk requiring the O-III filter and averted vision. The PN is best at 79X.
